Shock Report: The Life of European Jews in Hitler's Time *
Auschwitz et Birkenau (p.50)

At night and during the day, we saw American airplanes flying high in the sky, heading toward the war front. We knew that the Germans had been beaten in Moscow and that they had started to retreat. We learned the latest news from newly arrived prisoners. By this time, our only thought was, “Will we last long enough to see the next day?” Mother, although not feeling well, cheered us up and at times shared part of her ration with the rest of us. My brother, Karel, got very sick with typhus but miraculously recovered. He was seventeen by then, quite tall and really a good boy. There was only one successful escape from the Family  Camp.
